Historical Development
Established Area
Pathadumbara Divisional Secretariat is located in an area of 45.5 sq. Km. This division is located on the northern border of the Kandy district in the Central Province and is divided into two corals, Udagampaha and Pallegampaha. The northern boundary is surrounded by Matale and the southern boundary is bordered by the Mahaweli River and the Gangawata Korale and Kundasale Divisional Secretariats. Four and a half miles from north to south.The northern and eastern part is mountainous and is bordered by the beautiful Hunnasgiri Hills at a height of 5000 feet and the Panvila Divisional Secretariat. The Mahaweli River flows through the northern boundary of the Pathadumbara Divisional Secretariat at an elevation of 1000 to 3000 feet above sea level, feeding on the Ravan Oya, Piga Oya and Pussalu Oya.
There are about 600 hectares of paddy lands in the Divisional Secretariat area of Padathambara Divisional Secretariat and in addition to paddy cultivation, fruits and other mixed crops can be seen. Mangoes, bananas, avocados, rambutans, papayas and anodes are the main fruit crops, while cloves, nutmeg, pineapple, pepper, coffee, cocoa and vanilla can be found as economic crops.
The specific industries of this area are pottery, brass, timber and reed. In addition, pottery, black stone and brick clay, which are common in the area, are special mineral resources.
The main city is Wattegama and the suburbs are Madawala and Ambatenna. The main roads are the road from Kandy to Matale via Madawala Wattegama in Katugastota and the Matale road through Katugastota, Ambatenna to Matale, Madawala, Digana, Menikhinna road and Wattegama Panvila road and Madawala, Sirimalwatta, Lewella, Kandy roads can be mentioned as sub main roads.
Evolution of the Institution
Pathadumbara Divisional Secretariat was first located at a building used for teachers’ quarters in Katugastotawatte colony. At that time a person called Mr. Chandrapala had covered the duties of Assistant Government Agent.Pathadumbara Divisional Secretariat was first located at a building used for teachers’ quarters in Katugastotawatte colony. After that in 1976 office was shifted to a location at Pitiyegedara, the place where the Maternity home was situated before it was carried to the present place at Warakagastenna close to Wattegama town.
The first Assistant Government Agent in 1976 was Mr. Dharmahewa Madduma and the office staff was limited to a small group. Number of Grama Niladhari divisions was also very less than today. From that period there had been lot of developments in the office environment and the buildings such as constructions and establishing new sections.
New buildings were opened by Minister of Home Affairs Mr. Pestus Perera at 18th March in 1992. Since then the office crew under various talented Assistant Government Agents and Divisional Secretaries have gained lot of credits and triumphs. They have been serving the nation reaching towards various improvements.
